I have been a bird watcher (a BIRDER) for many years. Birding has been called America’s fastest growing outdoor activity. Around seventy million Americans are counted as birders. I have seen more than half of the birds that are normal for North America. I have added a few articles to this site on some of the topics that are asked about quite often.
To get started as a birder, I recommend that you pick up a copy of "Pete Dunne on Bird Watching." As the cover notes, the book covers the how-to, where-to and when-to of birding. Pete is the director of the Cape May Bird Observatory in New Jersey. It is one of the premier bird watching locations in the world. He is the author of over half dozen books on birds and a mentor to many people who love birds. Anyone who owns a bird book and a pair of binoculars can enjoy bird watching, but like any sport, you must learn the rules. Bird watching rules are based on knowing and protecting the birds themselves. From my many years as a birder, I know that it is a common interest that brings birders together. It doesn’t matter what your level of experience is when you are looking for birds, every pair of eyes helps. Whether you bird watch as part of a group or by yourself, out in the forest preserves or in your back yard, this book will provide you with many great ideas. At only $12.00, this book makes an easy gift idea. It is published by Houghton Mifflin Company. I sold binoculars and telescopes in my wild bird products store. I think you will find the articles about How to Buy Binoculars and How to Buy Telescopes and Spotting Scopes easy to understand. If you are new to bird feeding, then check out the Bird Feeding Page. Hummingbirds and Hawks are two very popular bird groups. There are several links under both areas to help you learn more about these interesting birds. |
